Allen University’s “GET THE TOOLS” is driven by the spirit to encourage the participation of small and disadvantage farmers in gaining access to resources of state and federal programs administered by the United States Department of Agriculture, and communicate and educate our community through effective outreach and technical assistance. Our efforts will specific target to increase the number of Youth, faith-based communities, women, veterans, and communities of colors that know about, engage USDA resources around farming.

In the town of Megget, SC, Winsome Winn Farms and Allen University hosted a town hall meeting to Showcase The Seasonal High Tunnel/Contractor’s Permits Procedures to local farmers. Speakers include: Lori Bataller of NRCS District Conservationist for North Charleston, Mark Nettles South Carolina State University Research and Extension, Al Jenkins Senator Tim Scott’s office, Assistant County Administrator for Charleston County Permitting and Wilfred Pace, CEO Pace & Associates of South Carolina, LLC.

Sarah DuBose of Sassafras Flower Farm is gardener and owner of Sassafrass Flowers in Easley. Each summer season, DuBose grows 12-15 varieties of flowers. Her 500 zinnia plants are able to produce 1,000 usable stems per week.
